DANIEL EK
Daniel Ek is the co-founder and CEO of Spotify, a globally renowned music streaming service. His vision and entrepreneurial spirit have fundamentally transformed the entertainment industry. Spotify’s “freemium” model allows users to access a large catalog of music for free, supported by advertisements, or to opt for a premium subscription without ads. This approach provided a compelling alternative to illegal downloading and contributed significantly to reducing music piracy. Born in Stockholm, Sweden, Ek launched his first company at age 14 and later dropped out of the Royal Institute of Technology to pursue his business ambitions. At the age of 23, Ek and Martin Lorentzon co-founded Spotify, for which Ek currently serves at CEO. The motivation behind Spotify stemmed from Ek’s frustration with the limited legal access to music online and the rampant piracy plagueing the industry. He envisioned a platform that offered users easy access to a vast library of music, while ensuring fair compensation for artists through a legal and sustainable model. Under Ek’s leadership, Spotify expanded beyond music streaming to include podcasts, audiobooks, and other audio content, diversifying its offerings and broadening its user base. Spotify’s personalized playlists and recommendation algorithms have reshaped how people discover and consume music. By creating a sustainable revenue model for musicians and content creators, Spotify has empowered artists to reach global audiences without the constraints of traditional distribution channels. This democratized access to music provides emerging artists with a platform to gain recognition and build careers. Spotify’s success has prompted other companies to explore subscription-based models for content distribution. In 2019, Ek announced a €1 million donation to support the Swedish cultural and creative industries, an initiative aimed to promote and sustain cultural heritage, arts, and creativity within Sweden. He has shown interest in supporting education and entrepreneurship initiatives and has been involved in promoting entrepreneurial education in Sweden.

DARIOUSH KHALEDI
Darioush Khaledi, the owner of Darioush Winery in Napa Valley, embarked on a new journey in the U.S. with his wife, Shahpar, in 1979. The revolution in Iran had forced them to relinquish their company and real estate holdings, a devastating blow. Undeterred, they spent the next 20 years building a thriving chain of supermarkets in Southern California, with 41 locations stretching from San Diego to Oxnard. Khaledi’s astute observation of an unmet need in the Hispanic community led him to provide high-quality food and wine, particularly in low-income areas with first-generation Mexicans. His life took a turn on a trip to Napa Valley to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his marriage to Shahpar. His love for wine, nurtured by the cultural history of winemaking in Shiraz, Iran, led him to this new path. “My love of wine had always been in my blood, and I learned how to use wine, became a wine collector, and started traveling to wineries, especially in Bordeaux. My dream of owning a winery slowly developed, and we began to search for property in Bordeaux. However, when my wife and I visited Napa, [we] discovered it was a better option.” He serves on Napa Valley’s OLE Health board, which has five health centers between St. Helena, Calistoga, Napa, and American Canyon. Seventy- four percent of OLE Health patients live at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. OLE provides care for more than 70 percent of the Medi-Cal population in Napa County (and about 30 percent of County residents are on Medi-Cal). Khaledi’s philanthropic endeavors include an instrumental role in establishing the community garden at OLE’s South Napa campus. He mobilized funds to support the garden’s mission of providing fresh produce to the underprivileged, promoting healthy meal preparation, and fostering home gardening. In recognition of his unwavering dedication, OLE Health named the garden the “Darioush Community Garden.” When asked how he feels about living in Napa Valley and giving back to the local community, Khaledi responded, “Many people in Napa are happy with where they are today and happy to give back.”

Since moving to the U.S. from Burgundy, France, he has been acquiring, restoring, and preserving landmarks all over California’s wine country, putting his inimitable touch on each location as he brings it back to life. Boisset knows more than a bit about historical and cultural appreciation and preservation. He hails from Vougeot, France, in Burgundy, where his family owns historically significant vineyards and wineries. He acquired California’s oldest continually operating grocery store, Oakville Grocery & Wine Merchant, when it became available in 1991. On the National Register of Historic Places, the 1881 grocery store initially offered provisions to the first wine country adventurers. Adjacent to Oakville Grocery stands what used to be the founder’s home. Boisset restored and transformed it into Napa’s first wine history museum—the 1881 Napa Museum. The Boisset Collection, owned by Boisset and his American wife, Gina Gallo-Boisset, includes Elizabeth Spencer Winery in Rutherford, which consists of the historic 1872 Post Office building welcoming guests into a boutique tasting room, outdoor gardens, and studio; Raymond Vineyards; Calistoga Depot; JCB Collection; Napa Valley’s Ink House; and many more. New to the portfolio is Casa Obsidiana, a collection of ultra-premium tequilas. His mission to conserve the short but poignant history of Napa Valley is evident in his purchase of landmark sites, dedication to their cultural importance, and restoration efforts, ensuring he has a place as one of the pioneers who built Napa Valley.

PAUL DRAPER
Best known for his influential role at Ridge Vineyards, a small California winery famous for producing high- quality, terroir-driven wines, Paul Draper played a pivotal role in the 1976 Judgment of Paris, a blind tasting where California wines famously outperformed French wines. Ridge’s Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon ranked among the top wines, solidifying California’s reputation on the global wine stage. Draper joined Ridge Vineyards in 1969, then a small winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains. His impact was immediate, focusing on traditional winemaking techniques and advocating for single-vineyard wines. Under his guidance, Ridge gained recognition for its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay. One of Draper’s significant contributions to California winemaking is his commitment to sustainable and organic viticulture. He embraced natural winemaking practices long before they became mainstream, advocating for minimal intervention in the vineyard and the cellar. He believes in allowing wines to evolve naturally, showcasing the unique characteristics of each vineyard site. Under Draper’s guidance, Ridge Vineyards has consistently produced wines of exceptional quality, earning Ridge a place among the world’s top wineries. Beyond Ridge, he has been an advocate for preserving California’s viticultural heritage, supporting efforts to protect old-vine vineyards, and promoting sustainable agriculture practices in the wine industry. A graduate of Stanford University with a degree in philosophy, Draper is respected for his humility and dedication to his craft. Despite his achievements, he remains focused on the vineyard and the wine, shying away from the spotlight. His wines continue showcase the potential of California terroir and set a standard for excellence in winemaking. He is the recipient of Wine Spectator’s Distinguished Service Award, Decanter Man of the Year, the James Beard Foundation’s Outstanding Wine and Spirits Professional Award, and various lifetime achievement awards from various wine organizations, acknowledging his long-standing commitment to quality winemaking and sustainable viticulture.

Her clients include many of the country’s top CEOs, celebrities, athletes, and other influencers who place their trust in her. With her solo venture, she has maintained and strengthened those connections, enabling her to secure limited allocations from cult labels such as Screaming Eagle, Abreu Vineyards, and Dana Estate, each of which maintains waiting lists just to get on their mailing lists. In addition to working with Napa Valley’s most revered vintners and winemakers, Laz keeps tabs on what’s new and undiscovered in micro-winery labels. The result is a collection of wines typically not found under one roof, let alone in one tasting, with bottles like Kata, Keplinger, and Fait-Main. Her collection of more than 500 haute labels includes some of the most coveted and hard-to-find bottles. In 2016, Laz added “vintner” to her title when she released the inaugural vintage of her own wine label, LAZ Wine, produced in partnership with famed winemaker Celia Welch and served at some of Napa’s most revered restaurants. Despite her varied wine industry successes, Laz is most proud of her work with the Alzheimer’s Association. In honor of her mother, she founded Inspire Napa Valley, a fundraising event that brings together wine enthusiasts, philanthropists, industry leaders, acclaimed vintners, and winemakers as only Laz could gather.
