American Beauty: The Osher Collection of American Art Opening Reception

The de Young Museum recently hosted a reception on May 15, 2024, celebrating the generous contributions of Bernard and Barbro Osher to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

Their collection, spanning the 19th and 20th centuries, showcased a diverse array of artistic perspectives from 1848 to 1960. Among the highlights were groundbreaking pieces, including Winslow Homer’s “The Angler,” William Merritt Chase’s “Spanish Bric-à-Brac Shop,” and George Bellows’ “In Virginia.” This promised gift significantly enriches the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s American art collection, featuring several “firsts” for the museum, alongside iconic works by Georgia O’Keeffe. Themes of exploration, impressionism, portraiture, and the beauty of America’s landscapes and seascapes are intricately woven throughout, offering visitors a captivating journey through history and creativity.
