Nick’s Cove Gets a Vintage-Inspired Makeover by GreenRow

Nick’s Cove, the beloved waterfront inn on Tomales Bay, has debuted a fresh look thanks to a new partnership with GreenRow, a Williams-Sonoma, Inc. brand. In its first-ever hospitality project, GreenRow has redesigned select cottages at the historic property, blending maritime character with sustainable, vintage-inspired design.

The project marks a thoughtful evolution for the 1930s-era retreat. GreenRow began by delving into the area’s long history, drawing on archival references from the mid-1800s through the early 20th century. The result is a “coastal cottage” aesthetic that’s nostalgic and quietly refined. Farrow & Ball paint colors, custom curtains, and richly patterned upholstery—crafted from GreenRow’s own sustainable fabrics—add character without straying from the inn’s roots.

Design choices reflect the natural surroundings of Tomales Bay. A palette of weathered blues, earthy greens, and soft neutrals mirrors the region’s coastal terrain. Fabrics feature reimagined heritage patterns—gingham, stripes, and florals—woven from OEKO-TEX® certified textiles and natural fibers like cotton and linen. These materials resist wear without relying on harmful chemicals.

GreenRow also prioritized environmental responsibility at every step. FSC®-certified wood furniture supports healthier forests, and every textile used in the cottages was selected with sustainability in mind. Guests can now experience a space that’s as beautiful as it is responsibly made.

The renovation builds on nearly a century of hospitality. Nick and Frances Kojich founded Nick’s Cove in 1931, converting fishing cottages and a herring curing facility into a restaurant and inn. After the Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937, the property became a popular stop for Bay Area travelers. Today, the original buildings—perched on pilings over the water—remain intact, their weathered charm preserved through careful updates.

The latest round of renovations, completed in late 2022 by IDF Studio and branding firm Bootjack, sought to honor that heritage while refreshing the interiors. Now, with GreenRow’s involvement, the vision continues to evolve with an emphasis on craftsmanship, comfort, and sustainability.

The property also welcomes a new Executive Chef, Matt Alfus, whose culinary path began in Chicago’s competitive restaurant scene. Alfus has worked at top kitchens including Bad Hunter, Schwa, and the Alinea Group’s Next. His move to West Marin marks a shift toward a slower pace and a deeper connection to local ingredients.

Chef Matt Alfus

At Hog Island Oyster Co., Alfus honed his knowledge of local seafood and developed a respect for the Tomales Bay ecosystem. He later led the kitchen at San Francisco’s Postscript Market, known for its seasonal, inventive offerings. At Nick’s Cove, he brings this experience to a menu focused on simplicity, seasonality, and coastal California flavor.

Alfus joins General Manager Wade Nakamine in guiding the next chapter at Nick’s Cove. Together, they’re building on a legacy of hospitality that combines local culture, sustainable practices, and timeless charm.
