Mendocino Coast’s Sacred Rock Inn is Stunning

After 10 years of renovations, Sacred Rock Inn is ready for its close-up. Located along the beautiful Mendocino Coast in Elk, the historic inn has been lovingly renovated and redesigned by the Jackson Rancheria Band of Miwuk Indians. Led by Band members Adam and Janet Dalton who discovered the property many years ago when it was the Griffin House and The Greenwood Pier Inn, Sacred Rock Inn now features 19 luxurious seaside accommodations within an eclectic collection of buildings.

The Daltons were initially drawn to the original property’s peaceful ambiance and tranquility, and when the opportunity arose to purchase the two seaside buildings, they jumped. Their grand vision was to develop an idyllic oceanside sanctuary—a haven where guests could escape the rigors of daily life and rediscover harmony, rejuvenation, and spiritual renewal. Their tireless efforts have made that vision a beautiful reality.

Perched atop towering cliffs on the Pacific coastline, right off of scenic Highway 1, Sacred Rock Inn offers a sense of meaningful wanderlust. The inn provides breathtaking ocean views and easy access to beautiful beaches, cliffs, and hiking trails. Surrounded by ancient redwood groves, lush green valleys, and breathtaking mountain tops, the inn’s coastal scenery is perfect for those seeking nature and serenity. The inn is also situated along the migration route of gray whales, which often can be spotted from the assortment of modernized yet historic quarters— charming bungalows, pet-friendly retreats, and a Victorian mansion. (Many rooms and cottages feature private decks or patios for optimal marine life viewing.) A renowned interior designer has refreshed each room, bringing in elements of the sea and of the surrounding natural beauty. Aquatic textures, contemporary patterns and bright earth-inspired colors add softness and warmth to the Victorian and Craftsman turn-of-the-century buildings.

Also redesigned and upgraded within Sacred Rock’s grounds you’ll find the artistic yet approachable dinner cuisine of intimate Greenwood Restaurant (formerly Greenwood Pier Restaurant) and the fun, unexpected flavors of recently-opened Elk House (formerly Bridget Dolan’s pub.) Serving breakfast and lunch, this vibrant eatery offers a range of globally-inspired dishes. The ambiance is quirky and vintage, and the yummy bites read as a collection of the chef’s favorite foods. Guests will love the curated lineup of craft beers and wines.

The small coastal town of Elk is known for its local art, cuisine, and community events. And further afield, you’ll find state parks, wineries, and charming towns such as Mendocino and Fort Bragg. But you’ll not be faulted if you choose not to leave the peaceful Sacred Rock property, where an emphasis on wellness and a connection to nature provide the most peaceful of retreats.
