Tsar Nicoulai Caviar Celebrates 40 Years

Food lovers, fashionistas, and oenophiles came together at the Ferry Building’s Grand Hall to celebrate National Caviar Day with Tsar Nicoulai Caviar on Saturday, July 20th.

The Bay Area’s pioneers of sustainable caviar, Tsar Nicoulai celebrated its 40th anniversary at the soirée—which saw partygoers in jackets adorned with tins of caviar, and glittery slingbacks with novelty champagne cork heels. A caviar cart welcomed guests at the door, serving caviar bumps (with optional potato chip) followed by flutes of Brut from Domaine Carneros.

A line snaked through the cheerful crowd for Aphotic Restaurant, whose bar director, Trevin Hutchins, served up martinis with seaweed gin and single vineyard manzanilla olives stuffed with Tsar Nicoulai’s ‘Reserve’ caviar. Other delectable bites spotlighting the delicacy were offered from La Mar, Hog Island Oyster, Daily Driver, Honey+Brie, MAC BBQ, Vacanza Romana, and Osito, complemented by generous pours from Nomadica, St. Supery, Grgich Hills Estate, and Lichen Estate. Among the caviar-topped nibbles: Dungeness crab and purple potatoes with avocado, quail egg, and aji amarillo sauce; and rockfish liver mousse served on fish eye chips. For dessert, ONE65’s Patisserie offered a bevy of sweet and tart delights. Guests danced the rest of the day away with lively samba dancers.

A portion of the funds raised will support UC Davis Aquaculture, which provides science-based support for California’s aquaculture farms.
